The brain needs amino acids.

Proteins play an important role for our brain as suppliers of amino acids. These protein building blocks serve not only as building material of body tissues, nerves and brain. They are also very important for the production of neurotransmitters and the function of the nerve network. Therefore, amino acids are indispensable for good performance of our brain. Our mood also depends on certain amino acids. Tryptophan, for example, is converted in the brain into the hormone serotonin. Among other things, this ensures a good mood and regulates our sleep-wake rhythm. It is also an important messenger substance responsible for the transmission of nerve impulses. Tryptophan is found in many foods, such as poultry, fish, dairy products, nuts and bananas. Another amino acid, isoleucine, improves the ability to think and has a positive effect on our psyche. In people with psychoses, scientists found increased low levels of isoleucine. Isoleucine is found in meat, tuna, salmon, wheat germ and nuts (especially peanuts), among others.
