Joint intake of calcium/magnesium

Magnesium & calcium: should they be taken together or not?

Magnesium and calcium are vital minerals. Among other things, they support the muscles, bones and energy metabolism. However, the question arises time and again: should they be taken together - or separately?

Joint ingestion - a problem?

There are different opinions about the combination of calcium and magnesium. Some fear that the two could interfere with each other's absorption. Others recommend taking them at the same time - especially in a certain ratio.

The good news is that with normal doses - whether from food or supplements - taking them at the same time is not a problem. Calcium and magnesium are absorbed in the intestine via different transport systems, which means that there is no significant competition. Although they sometimes act as physiological opponents, both minerals work together in the body and complement each other in many processes.

Is the ratio decisive? A ratio of around 2.5:1 (calcium to magnesium) is often recommended. However, this ratio refers to the recommended total daily intake, not to a single meal or food supplement. The body is able to regulate its intake according to individual needs. A precise ratio is therefore not absolutely necessary.

Why do we need magnesium and calcium at all?

Magnesium:

  • Supports energy production
  • Important for muscle function
  • Contributes to the maintenance of bones and teeth

Calcium:

  • Important for bone formation
  • Enables targeted muscle tension

Conclusion - No concerns with the combination!

It is safe to take magnesium and calcium at the same time - both through your diet and via dietary supplements. Make sure you have a balanced diet and that you consume sufficient amounts of both minerals.
